Monte Season Beginning in North America

As the 2017 standardbred stakes season reaches full steam ahead, so too does monte action in Ontario and the US. Monte trots are incredibly thrilling, especially with large competitive fields, and in Ontario wagering is permitted on races primarily at the “B” tracks.

It’s fitting that we report 2016 results (Canada and US, courtesy of USTA). The top horses based on earnings were Southwind Alice in Canada and Funny Photo in the US. The top riders were Evelyn Harms and Sophie Engerran and the leading monte trainers last year were Shane Arsenault and Patti Harmon.

Race Horses Coming Towards You

The excitement of monte at New York State county fairs will continue this summer with the fourth annual RUS NY Fair Series. The Series will consist of nine legs and a final championship race to be held at Saratoga Casino and Hotel on September 15th. Points earned along the way to determine final entries. Horses need at least two starts to be eligible for the final. A High Point Rider Award will again be presented at the final to the rider who has earned the most points, regardless of horse(s) ridden throughout the series. A single monte event for pacers is also scheduled.

Top-Flight Monte Action at Paris-Vincennes; Draft Life and Eye Of The Storm

Groupe action today at Paris-Vincennes included three monte events, two being Gr. I tests. The monte day began with the Prix Xavier de Saint Paris (monte, Gr. II, purse €120,000, 12 starters) and it went to 6.5/1 Cassate (5f Neoh Jiel-Quivadu Rib) with Adrien Lamy in the irons for Ecurie Luck and trainer J.L. Dersoir. 22/1 Cavalleria (5f Prodigious-Janga) was second for Eric Raffin and trainer Sebastien Guarato, with third to 18/1 Clara du Pontseuil (5f Mich Phili-Osaka d’Occagnes) for jockey Anthony Barrier. The heavy 9/10 favorite Canadien d’Am was a miscue dq.

The Gr. I Monte Prix Dessai (purse €200,000, 2175 meters, 12 starters, three year olds) went to 1.13kr clocked and 5/10 odds favorite Eye Of The Storm (3m Village Mystic-La Dolce Vita) with Yoann Lebourgeois in the irons. The Philippe Allaire owned and trained product was bred by Hugues Rousseau. 20/1 Epatante (3f Village Mystic-Suricate) almost nailed her stablemate on the line with Anthony Barrier up for trainer Allaire and breeder/owner Pierre Tebirent. 5/1 Eiffel Tower (3f Ready Cash-Nouvelle d’Atout) took third for jockey David Thomain, trainer J-M Bazire and owner Ottavia Roffi-Urano. The race winner bounced back nicely from a pair of recent miscue dq’s.

Draft Life (4f Ubriaco-Maflymede) at 10/1 took the prestigious Gr. I Monte Grand Prix du President de la Republique (purse €240,000, 2850 meters, 13 starters) with Eric Raffin in the irons. Raffin powered Draft Life to the front after 1000 meters and opened a huge margin that the pair held to the line. Louis Baudron bred, owns and trains the winner. Draft Life recorded her eighth career win in 21 starts, now for €482,170 earned. 13/1 Dawana (4f Ready Cash-Sanawa) was second for Anthony Barrier and owner/trainer Philippe Allaire. Third was 6/1 Dragon de Fresne (4m Saphir Castelets-Rosee des Bois) with Matthieu Abrivard, the jockey. Heavily backed Django Riff and Darling de Reux was miscue dq’s. Race time was 1.12.8kr. This event was presented, as was the entire program, very professionally and garnered great support from the large crowd in the fan and entertainment areas and in the winner’s circle. Great racing, great horses and fan entertainment makes for an unbeatable afternoon.

Bilibili Wins Monte Prix de L’Ile de France in Record Time

February 5, 2017

Jean-Pierre Barjon owned and bred Bilibili (6m Niky-Quetty du Donjon) won today’s Gr. I monte Prix de L’Ile de France (purse €200,000, 2175 meters, 11 starters) at Paris-Vincennes. Alexandre Abrivard was the pilot for trainer L.Cl. Abrivard in the seven length record time performance, 1.10.5kr (mile rate 1:53.43) after quick fractions (1.06.8kr at the 1500 to go mark, 1.08.1kr at the 1000 and 1.10.5kr with 500 remaining). 10.4/1 Attentionally (7f Jasmin de Flore-Intentionally) was second for David Thomain and breeder/owner/trainer Paul Viel. Third was 18.3/1 Adelia de Melodie (7f Lilium Madrik-Piccola Stella) for Anthony Barrier, the jockey. The torrid pace was set by Valdice de Mars, Tornade du Digeon and Vaillant Cash with the winner watching the action from the outer tier until a decisive move in the final bend.

This famous monte event began in 1978 and today’s record time eclipsed the 1.10.6kr mark set a year ago by Scarlet Turgot. French trotters have won each edition except three that were won by Sweden’s Revenue (by Reve d’Udon), Vasterbo Daylight (by Spotlite Lobell) and Hot Tub (by Sugarcane Hanover).

Bellissima France Wins Prix de Cornulier – Extraordinaire Performance!!!

3.2/1 second choice Bellissima France (6f Blue Dream-Quanta Rosa Sun) tracked the pace before making a strong move in the lane to wear down 18.8/1 Tornade du Digeon (10f Jag de Bellouet-Herlane du Terme) to win the Gr. I Monte Prix de Cornulier (purse €700,000, 2700 meters, 16 starters). Owner/trainer/jockey Matthieu Abrivard piloted Bellissima France to a 1.13kr victory, well off the 1.12kr record set by Quif de Villeneuve. Tornade du Digeon raced gamely for Eric Raffin, trainer J-M Bazire and owner J-Y Roze. 1.7/1 Bilibili (6m Niky-Quetty du Donjan) was third for Alexandre Abrivard, trainer L.Cl. Abrivard and breeder/owner Jean Pierre Barjon. 8.6/1 Attentionally (7f Jasmin de Flore-Intentionally) was fourth for David Thomain and breeder/owner/trainer Paul Viel, ahead of 4.7/1 Bird Parker (6m Ready Cash-Belisha) for Anthony Barrier, trainer Philippe Allaire and owner Elisabeth Allaire.

Alexandre Abrivard reined the winner for trainer L.Cl. Abrivard and owner Ch. Germain. 23/1 Dino de Jilme (3g Orsy Dream0Une du Maine) was a close second for P.Y. Verva and 9/1 Dragon d’Avril (3m Thorens Vedaquais-Sirene d’Avril) landed third for jockey Adrien s’Avril and owner/trainer Sebastian Houyrey. The winner was clocked in 1.16.5kr off even fractions.

Action returns to Vincennes tomorrow with the Gr. III Prix Ourasi for two year olds. Everest Vedaquais is the likely favorite. On Saturday three groupe events highlight the program along with the eighth edition of the Prix des Rencontres Internationale. Sunday’s program include five groupe contests headed by the €150,000 purse Grand National du Trot Finale. Swedishman, Val Royale and Ultimate du Rib are in the Gr. II field that will battle over 2850 meters.

The Tiger (9g Nelson de Vandel-Notre Dame Bourbon) took today’s featured Prix de L’Ile de Re (monte, purse €95,000, 2850 meters, 20 European starters) clocked in 1.13.3kr for Damien Bonne and trainer/owner Benjamin Goetz. The 2.3/1 odds favorite defeated 19/1 Safari Dream (10g Gai Brillant-La Memonia) with J-Y Ricart up and third was 32/1 Andalouse (6f Tenor de Baune-Mosaique) with Yoann Lebourgeois in the irons.

Indiana-bred Hyway Marcus (5g Gut Instinct-Highway Angel-Prince Pine) took tonight’s RUS non-wagering event (purse US$5,000) at Rosecroft Raceway. Numerous sponsors were responsible for the purse and organization of this event that drew four starters.  Maria Buchanan rode the winner for owner Marohn Racing LLC and trainer Patti Harmon. The winning team scored in gate to wire fashion timed in 2:01.1f. Stablemate Funny Photo was second for Sophie Engerran.

12/1 The Tiger (9g Nelson de Vandel-Notre Dame Bourbon) scored a 1.14.1kr victory in the Prix de l’ile d’Oleron (monte, purse €110,000, 2850 meters, 12 European starters). Damien Bonne teamed the winner for owner/trainer Benjamin Goetz. 3/1 Ulka des Champs (8f Offshore Dream-Melissa des Champs) took second for Eric Raffin and third was 41/1 Art On Line (9g Rite On Line-Lass Fleur).

On the Paris-Vincennes card was the Prix d’Aix les Bains (purse €37,000, 2700 meters, 15 starters) and the 1.15kr winner was 1.9/1 Duke Josselyn (3m Royal Dream-Tena Josselyn). Eric Raffin piloted the Etienne Dubois that he also trains. Yvan Bernard was the breeder of this consistent youthful performer. 4.6/1 Daddy Cash (3m Ready Cash-Tite Dry) landed second with Yoann Lebourgeois up for owner Frederic Sauque and trainer Philippe Allaire. 38/1 Django Galbe (3g Nomade du Digeon-Milady Galbe) was third for Benoit Robin.

The Prix de Miramont de Guyenne (monte, purse  €36,000, 2700 meters, eight starters) was a competitive affair for the monte performers with six within two lengths. 6.9/1 Cantate Vrie (4f Texas Charm-Primeur Vrie) rallied to win for Matthieu Abrivard, owner/trainer Julian Dubois and Louis Baudron was the breeder. 9.9/1 Charmeuse Desbois (4f Ganymede-Idole) was second for Eric Raffin, trainer Fabrice Souloy and Ecurie de Tremont. 5.6/1 Calypso Vinoir (4f Jam Pridem-Lambada Vinoir) and Franck Nivard was third for owner/trainer Damien Bonne.

The Prix de Belfort (purse €64,000, 2700 meters, 18 starters) went to 1.14.3kr winner, 2.3/1, barefoot, Bakchich (5g Quopeck-Paix de Villeneuve). Tony LeBeller teamed Bakchich for trainer/owner Jerome Michael Legros. 20/1 Bourbon Somolli (5m Sam Bourbon-Jamaica Somolli) was second, three lengths back. For David Thomain and trainer Thierry Duvaldestin. 10/1 Black Atout (5m Prodigious-La Legune) rallied between rivals to be third for Franck Nivard and trainer Franck Leblanc.


The November 18 Quinte+ is on the night program at Vincennes in the Prix Mizar. Sunday at Vincennes should be a superb racing lineup with three groupe races headed by the Prix de Bretagne, first of the B’s leading to d’Amerique in late January, and the Prix Annick Dreux for fillies that includes Dawana and Douce Rebelle.

The featured monte Gr. II Prix Louis Tillaye (purse €120,000, 2700 meters, eight starters) this day went to 1.14.9kr timed and 5.6/1 odds Dhikti Vedaquais (3m Thorens Vedaquais-Marie Blanque) with Anthony Barrier in the irons. Philippe Allaire is owner/trainer of the colt bred by Jean-Pierre Guay. The 1/5 favorite Dollar Macker (3m Saxo de Vandel-Salt Lake City) was second for jockey Yoann Lebourgeois and owner Olivier Henri Thomas. Allaire also trains Dollar Macker. Third was 13.2/1 Dragon d’Avril (3m Thorens Vedaquais-Sirene d’avril) for Antoine Lamy and trainer/owner Sebastien Houyuet. Race fractions were modest (1.16.3kr at 1500 meters to go; 1.14.8kr at the 1000; 1.15.3kr with 500 meters remaining). The sire Thorens Vedaquais 1:56.2 (US$729,796) is by Cygnus d’Odyssee, a son of Workaholic, and the dam is Muntanyetai  by Cezio Josselyn (by Armbro Goal) from a Florestan mare.

Canadien d’Em Wins Gr. II Monte Prix Olry-Roederer at Vincennes

The day’s monte feature was the Gr. II Prix Olry-Roederer (monte, purse €120,000, 2100 meters, nine starters). Even-money favorite Canadien d’Em (4m Ready Cash-Kanadia) scored for Mathieu Mottier, trainer Franck Leblanc and owner Laurent Edin. The winner held off charging 27/1 Talisker Horse (4f Pine Chip-Ira Horse) with Camille Levesque up for trainer Thomas Levesque. Third was 5/1 Celina Polka (4f Kool de Caux-La Canella) for Alexandre Abrivard and owner/trainer Joel Van Eeckhaute.

Christian Hoste bred the 22 time career winner from 90 starts, now for earnings of €1,376,250. 8/1 Tornade de Digeon (9f Jag de Bellouet-Halana du Torme) was second for Eric Raffin and 44/1 Ugo On Wood (8g Nuage Noir-Madone On Wood) finished third for Leo Abrivard and trainer L.Cl. Abrivard. 3.3/1 Attentionally was fourth for jockey David Thomain.
